YLSS Commissions New MusicTwo dozen YLSS players had fascinating and exhausting Sunday last November, sight reading the four shortlisted pieces for our Commission, meeting the composers and having their say in the selection.Guided by George, our guest composer Joe Cutler, and players' comments, the Panel made the final choice at the end of the day and we are delighted to announce that the winner is... Laurence Rose's piece 'a theory of nothing' This is a bold and exciting choice for YLSS, a truly contemporary piece but written specially for us with players of all abilities in mind. The piece is not too difficult technically, but there is plenty to challenge us in the notation, the timing, and in achieving the amazing sound that we started to discover in the piece at the workshop. There is plenty of more conventional string music available but this piece will add something fresh and different to the repertoire, as well as confirming that YLSS is serious about promoting composition of new music, as well as about playing. Laurence Rose will work with YLSS over the next few months to refine the piece and to help us get to know it well. He will join us for two sessions, probably the second half of two Saturday mornings, extended a little to give us more time on the piece. We will then plan a premier performance sometime next year. This is a great opportunity for us to get to know a contemporary piece, written specially for YLSS. It looks very different at first sight but, don't be scared, once familiar it gives us chance to create a different sound from our usual repertoire but one which will, hopefully, allow us to sound really good when we perform it. There is something for everyone to learn in this piece and, after all, that is what YLSS is all about.
